How to Help Those With Special Memory Care Needs

We at Morrow Manor are proud to offer the Pathways Memory Care program at our Chesterville, Ohio facility. Through this program we are able to connect one-on-one with those residents who have special memory care needs and assist them based on their levels of psychological and physical need.

Special memory care is not just for those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, though. Memory loss falls on a spectrum and is related to a variety of diseases. Alzheimer’s is a disease, while dementia is a broad term that encompasses a decline in mental ability. We also welcome patients with conditions such as amnesia, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, and other memory disorders.

We understand that these memory care needs require special attention and a specific skill set. If your loved one is not able to stay at Morrow Manor, however, and relies on caregivers at home, we have some tips that will hopefully help both parties involved.

One of the most important things to consider when interacting with someone with a special memory care need is to create a positive, clear, and accessible conversational environment for them. Limit your distractions and ask simple questions, or redirect the subject if he or she becomes frustrated. Be an excellent active listener.

Try to remember that while we may not be able to change the disorder, we can change our reactions to their behavior or change their surroundings. With support from their doctor and organizations such as the Alzheimer’s association, you can be an informed advocate for their wellbeing, too. When you grasp what triggers troubling behavior for them, you can also take preventive measures to help.
